Why do whales smack their tales and flippers on the water?

Saturday I was on a whale watching trip on Cape Cod.This big humpback whale, who the guide said was about 3 years old, started hitting its tale and its flippers on the water. The guide said this was normal whale behavior, but he didn't say what exact behavior it was. Does any one know? Thanks!
