As an A1C, Tactical Aircraft Maintenance, what would my responsibilities be?

I was told by a retired AF Major that as an A1C, until NCO grades, I would be used as a glorified greasemonkey, cleaning oil spills and whatnot, for the first 2-5 years. How much truth is there to this? I scored a 93 on the ASVAB, is there a more responsible career field working with tactical aircraft that would better suit my skill set?
