Another question on evolution?

Since most of you who answered my question concerning evolution wrote that we humans are but apes then I am at a loss to understand that in case we are just animals why holocaust or any brutality is found to be bad at all and why we should strive to be moral beings and have values? Why all that toil if we are only animals?
